The Android smartphone market in India has just received a breath of fresh air with the launch of the complete version of Maluuba, a personal assistant app like Apple’s Siri. Maluuba, which was till now available in only in the US, UK, Australia and Ireland, can now be downloaded through Google Play in the sub continent as well. The new version of Maluuba in India has been designed specifically for the country.
Some Android users are familiar with the personal assistant, for its international version has been accessible in India for a few days. Though it had all its basic functions in place, it lacked local restaurant and movie searches. With its new complete version, Maluuba can search events, show times, businesses and restaurants with ease, all over the country.
Maluuba’s press release detailed its innovation for India, ‘Using the complete version, users in India can now ask questions like “I want to watch the Karan Johar movie Student of the Year in Bandra”, and Maluuba would understand the context and location of the user’s query and return a set of appropriate movie theatres and showtimes.’
The company is looking to expand in India in a big way and sees a lot of potential in the country. Said Sam Pasupalak, CEO, Maluuba about the Indian smartphone market, ‘When we launched our international beta last month, we found out that the largest proportion of our users came from India. We realized that India has a growing market of Android users and we wanted to release a full version here to give users in India the complete experience. Further, most people in India cannot use Siri since iPhones are expensive, hence this would give the Android users a chance to start adopting the new voice based search paradigm.’
For Indian consumers, Maluuba ushers in a new era of smartphone convenience at reasonable rates, something that is sure to grow by leaps and bounds pretty quickly. It will be interesting to see what Android’s competitors do to counter apps like this personal assistant in India. Apple and Microsoft, are you listening?
