Feature phones have always been Nokia’s forte and the Finnish phone manufacturer is consolidating its position even further with its new offering, the Nokia 109. A low-end entry level device, the 109 runs on Nokia’s old Series 40 operating system but gives its users what most smartphone enthusiasts demand on their handsets – cheap internet access.

Nokia’s latest offering sports dimensions of 110 x 46 x 14.8 mm and weighs in at just 77gm. The 109 is equipped with a 1.8-inch TFT screen with a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels. It is equipped with a FM radio and supports dual-band GSM/EDGE connectivity. A microSD card can be attached to the phone to expand its memory externally by up to 32 GB.

The handset also houses Nokia’s Xpress Browser which compresses web pages by up to 90 per cent and thereby ensures less usage of data. Nokia 109 users can surf the web anytime, anywhere without worrying about their data charges going through the roof. The phone also comes pre-installed with a number of social networking apps like Facebook and Twitter.

Nokia’s new device boasts of 33 days of standby time on its battery, which is excellent by any standard. The 109 will start retailing in Asia Pacific, China and Europe in the near future. It will hit stores in variants of black and cyan with a price tag of $42 (approx. Rs. 2,200) before taxes.
