The 7-inch tablet segment today got a new kid in the block with Hewlett-Packard (HP) sending their new entry, the HP Slate 7 on sale. Available for $170, it's the first non-Web OS tablet from HP. In case you forgot, HP had launched the Web OS based HP Touchpad quite a while ago, which unfortunately was not received well.
Now looking to encash on the popularity of the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire, HP has launched the Slate 7. It comes with a 7-inch FFS+ LCD capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 600 x 1024 pixels giving it a ppi of 170, which should be fairly decent to look at. It runs on Android Jelly Bean 4.1 on a Dual-core 1.6 GHz Cortex-A9 processor. So no quad core which comes as a bit of a surprise as most other companies are going all in on the "quad-core" craze these days.
Apart from that, it has a 3.15 MP camera on the back capable of shooting videos at 720p and a VGA front camera for video calling. No SIM support but it has a microUSB v2.0 port,so if you want to browse, you need to get a dongle. Or use the Wi-Fi. No FM Radio and no GPS, which is, flabbergasting to say the least. Don't know what HP was thinking. It does have a 3.5 mm head jack and comes with Beats Audio sound enhancement.
On the memory segment, it comes with 8 Gigabyte of internal memory which can be expanded up to 32 Gigabyte using a microSD card and comes with 1GB of RAM. Also is a 3500 mAh non-removable battery inside which claims to give a talk time of 5 hours.
The HP Slate 7 comes a bit late to the market which is already dominated by the likes of the Nexus 7, the Kindle Fire and the iPad Mini. With the Google I/O meet around the corner and talks of a new Nexus 7 on the cards, it will be hard for HP to make this device a success.
But if you still think the HP Slate 7 is the one for you ( why would you think like that ? ) head over to the HP Store.
