Earlier today, Asus launched the 7 inch FonePad tablet in India for Rs. 15,999. And now we stack it up against Google Nexus 7, it's direct rival, which incidentally is made by Asus too.
As you can see there a few differences here and there. The FonePad supports SIM cards which will allow you to make voice calls and for bowsing and you don't have to invest in an extra USB dongle. It also has a 1.2 MP front camera allowing you to make video calls with your near and dear ones which is something that was missed in the Nexus 7.
In the hardware section, the Google Nexus 7 triumphs over the FonePad. The Nexus 7 packs in a Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor each running at 1.2 GHz, coupled with that is a ULP GeForce GPU and that promises you a butter smooth experience whether you are browsing or gaming.
The Nexus 7 comes in fixed storage capabilities of 16GB or 32 GB, whereas the FonePad comes with 8 GB of storage but that can be easily expanded using a microSD card.
The FonePad on the other hand is the first tablet in the country to come up with a Intel processor. Inside it is a single core Intel Atom Z2420 processor running at 1.2 Ghz. With that is a PowerVR SGX540 GPU, so we might expect a bit of a lag while running heavy games like Nova 3. Both come with 1GB of RAM. None of the tablets will give you any problems while running HD videos, so if games are not on the top of your list, don't expect to find any major difference in both.
Also, Nexus 7 will give you the latest in Android with it being upgradable to 4.2 which bring with it minor fixes and lots of other gimmicks. FonePad, comes with Jelly Bean 4.1 out-of-the-box, which is not so bad. Although there has been no word on if it will get a 4.2 upgrade or not.
The Nexus 7 and FonePad promises to give 10hrs and 9hrs of talk time, which is decent enough. With both of them packing a 4000mAh+ battery, they should last a full day on standby.
VERDICT : Both the Google Nexus 7 and FonePad are manufactured by Asus and are both priced at Rs. 15,999. If voice calling is not your thing and you have no problems in investing in a dongle for browsing, go for the Nexus 7. It will also able you to play graphics-intense games. But do remember, no front facing camera. But, but but BUT, if you are going to use the tablet for voice calls and video calls, then look no further, the Asus 7-inch FonePad is here.
