In an unexpected development, e-commerce giant Amazon.com today became the ground of the world's first small screen Windows-8 based tablet. The place you would hardly expect to find a leak.

The Acer Iconia W3-810-1600 was briefly listed in Amazon's website before being taken down. The first pictures of the rumored tablet appeared at TabletGuide.nl a couple of weeks ago.
This development is significant as previous generations of Windwos-8 tablets were of screen sizes much larger,  10.1 inches or so. By scaling down screen resolution requirements for it's tablets, Windows might be hoping to give some tough competition to rival Apple's iPad Mini and Google's Nexus 7. The market has been flooding with 7-inch and 8-inch tablets and Microsoft was left behind to compete in the higher-priced segment of 10-inch tablets.

Coming back to the Acer Iconia W3 and going by Amazon's specifications chart, this device will be powered by a 1.5 GHz Apple A4 processor, which is wrong and appears in many of Amazon's Windows-8 based products. Instead it will get a Intel Atom Z2760 processor. That’s the same CPU found in several currently available 10-inch Windows 8 tablets, including HP’s Envy X2, Dell’s Latitude 10, and Acer’s 10-inch W510. It will weigh around 1.1 pounds, which is 0.49Kg (you lazy people won't even convert yourself). Also you will be getting 2GB of SD RAM and 64MB of Intel Graphics Media Accelerator. The specs show this device running a 32-bit version of Windows 8 Pro, which means in theory it’s capable of running almost any Windows desktop app, including Microsoft Office.

Amazon had the Iconia W3 listed at a $379.99, which is $50 more than the iPad mini, which isn't really the most inexpensive tablet out here, but it does promise to offer the Windows experience at less than Rs. 20,000.

The earliest benchmark scores are from nearly a month ago, suggesting that the device could enter the market sooner than the expected unveiling of Windows Blue at Microsoft's BUILD Conference in late June.
