Studying abroad has exploded in popularity in recent years, with more than 270,000 American students heading to a foreign country in the 2009-2010 school year, according to the Princeton Review. Universities recognize that studying abroad is an important goal for many students and continue to expand their study abroad programs. If you're planning to study in a foreign country, you have some great resources at your disposal. Download some (or all) of these free apps to your smartphone or tablet to save time, money and worry when you're "over there."
Jibbigo :-
Available for Android and iPhone, Jibbigo is a speech translator. Just say something into your phone, and this app will repeat the sentence in a foreign language. You’ll also see the English message appear on your phone, so you know Jibbigo got your message right. Jibbigo offers offline functionality for most languages, freeing you from the need for an Internet connection or data plan. The app offers 20 languages, from Spanish and French to Thai and Pashto.
Smart Traveler :-
This official app from the State Department is a great resource for travelers heading abroad. Available for iPhone, iPad and Android devices, the Smart Traveler app offers updated country information, travel alerts and warnings, maps and locations of the nearest U.S. embassy. Join the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) before you leave, too. Also consider choosing a credit monitoring service to determine whether your identity has been stolen while abroad.
AroundMe :-
So you’ve just landed in Munich and really need to find a pharmacy to buy some ibuprofen. AroundMe is a local search app that gives you the names of places closest you. Search for pharmacies, pubs, banks, grocery stores and hotels to find the most convenient places in your new city. AroundMe is available for iPhone, Windows Phone and Android.
WebMD :-
Even if you traveled far from home to go to college, studying abroad is a whole new kind of independence. When you wake up with nausea, a fever or a strange rash, your friends and family are at least one whole country away. Use the WebMD app to help you gauge whether a trip to the doctor might be necessary. Launch the Symptom Checker, answer a series of questions and the app will provide information about likely causes and recommended treatments. Also, remember to set up international medical insurance through an agency such as HCCMIS before you leave home. If you need medical care, your regular insurance provider might not cover medical services delivered abroad.
OnTheRoad :-
Studying abroad is the experience of a lifetime, and you’ll want those memories to stick. For journal lovers, OnTheRoad allows you to chronicle your experiences abroad. Keep them offline for your personal use, or upload them to an online travelbook. For added security, you can add a PIN to restrict access only to friends and loved ones. Available for iPhone or Android, the app offers geotagging for pictures and posts and gives you an interactive map of your travels. Plus, its local weather updates and trip planning features makes it indispensable when traveling in a new region.
