2013 was always going to be a big year for the gaming industry as we were speculating the launch of next-gen gaming consoles from Sony and Microsoft and now, it seems that our wait would be much shorter than we initially expected. Sony has started sending out invites for an event on February 20 in New York City and along with the invite, is a teaser video depicting the classic PlayStation symbols followed by the date FEB 20, 2013.
Considering the first three iterations of Sony PlayStation were launched at a gap of six years, with the original PlayStation console making it’s debut in 1994 followed by PlayStation 2 in 2000 and the current, PlayStation 3 debuting in 2006, so one can safely assume that the time is just about right for unveiling of the new version of PlayStation.
Soon after Sony started sending out the invited, a report appeared in The Wall Street Journal which cited “people familiar with the matter” and said that Sony would indeed unveil the successor to PlayStation 3 on February 20 and the console would go on sale later this year.
The report went on to say that Sony plans to add many new social gaming features on the PlayStation 4, rather than focusing on bumping the hardware on the gaming console.Also, at it was being predicted earlier, Sony had initially though of doing away with the optical disk drive on the PlayStation 4, but decided otherwise due to concerns raised of downloading times of the games. The report also mentions that Sony will likely shift away from chips developed by Sony-IBM-Toshiba that currently power the PlayStation 3 and include chips developed by AMD on the new PlayStation 4.
