Sony is launching great
devices in this year, viz. Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Z Ultra, etc. Since, all
of them are the top-end and mid-range smartphones, Sony has shifted its focus
to affordable segment. The result is Xperia M which comes in both single and
dual sim versions. Let’s see what the device is offering-
- Design
The smartphone has a similar
design with other Xperia devices and likewise highlights aluminum power button
on its right side. Although, the body is made of plastic and rubber providing
it an average build quality. The device is very handy with dimensions measuring
at 124 x 62 x 9.3 mm and portable with 124 g weight. The front is prominently
covered by display and sensors, secondary camera above it and virtual
capacitive keys for navigation at bottom. At the right side, it has a power
button, volume rocker and dedicated camera key, while left side has microUSB
port. The top has a standard headphone jack and the bottom is bereft of any
elements. It’s back has a soft rubberized feel and features a primary camera
and speaker mesh.
It’s available in vibrant
colors of Black, White, Yellow and Purple.
- Display
Sony Xperia M flaunts a 4
inch capacitive touchscreen with resolution 854 x 480 pixels. This results in
pixel density if 245 ppi. The display offers sharp colors, however has poor
viewing angles.
- Hardware
From inside, the device is
powered by a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus processor clocked at 1.2
GHz. It’s backed by a 1 GB RAM ensuring smooth performance while running apps,
playing games or doing multitasking. In memory department, the smartphone has
measly 4 GB RAM, out of which only 1.5 GB is available to the user. The good
thing is that the user can expand its memory up to 32 GB via microSD card.
For connectivity purposes,
Xperia M offers 2G/ 3G support, Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi, and even NFC. This is the
first device in this segment coming with NFC support, which till now was
available in premium smartphones. It’s fueled by a removable battery of 1700
mAh with STAMINA mode for optimized use of battery life.
- Software
Sony Xperia M is loaded with
Android 4.1.2 (JellyBean) OS with Sony’s customizations on top of it. The
device has several Google Apps as well as Sony’s apps like Walkman, Sony Liv,
etc. There are numerous third party apps as well which can please Indian users-
Paytm, BigFlix, and more.
- Camera
The device sports a 5 MP
camera at the back along with autofocus and LED flash. It has various features
such as Panorama, HDR, image stabilization, etc. It’s capable of recording
videos at 720 pixels resolution.
For video chatting purposes,
it has a VGA camera at the front.
- Conclusion
Budget segment has been ripe
for offerings as the market is currently filled with local company’s devices or
old generation devices from Samsung, HTC, etc. Xperia M is a great choice for
users looking to buy a device in this segment. Though, Xperia M’s VGA front
camera and poor viewing angles comes across as its biggest disadvantages.
