Samsung, which was undoubtedly surprised by the usually-slow-to-market Apple announcing that the iPhone 5S would be the first 64-bit smartphone on the market, has announced that its “next smartphones” will also have “64-bit processing functionality.” This presumably means that the Galaxy S5, or perhaps the phone after that, will have a 64-bit SoC — and, perhaps more importantly, that Android will make the leap to 64-bit, too. Whether smartphones actually <span style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">gain</span> anything from 64-bit processing, or whether this is merely a 3D TV-like marketing ploy, is another question entirely.</div>

At the iPhone 5S launch last week, Apple surprised us all by announcing that its new smartphone would be the first in the world to support 64-bit software. In true Apple style, we don't know a whole lot about the A7, except that it's Apple-designed and based on the new ARMv8 instruction set. ARMv8 is 64-bit, but it is backwards compatible with 32-bit ARMv7. Almost every mobile chip in the last few years has been based on the ARMv7 Cortex-A7 or -A9 cores, with the exception of Qualcomm and Apple, who designed their own cores (which are still fairly similar to ARM's reference cores). While there is a Cortex-A15, its large power envelope makes it almost unusable in smartphones — and then there's Cortex-A53 and -A57, which are ARM's first 64-bit reference designs.</div>

As far as we can tell, judging by the limited info released by Apple, the A7 SoC is probably based on the Cortex-A57 core. Samsung, when it releases a 64-bit phone, will almost certainly use an Exynos SoC that uses the Cortex-A57 CPU core. This is all well and good, except for one thing: Cortex-A57, ARMv8, and 64-bit computing are essentially useless in mobile devices. They are primarily low-power, high-density server-oriented technologies.</div>

There is almost no reason for Samsung to follow in the A7′s footsteps, except to counter any marketing FUD that Apple throws up. There are minimal performance gains to be had from switching to 64-bit, and in some cases there might even be a small hit to performance and battery life. You might see this as long-term future proofing, but even on desktop PCs, where x86-64 chips have been the norm for 10 years, the impact of 64-bit computing has been negligible. Yes, we need to switch to 64 bits at some point, but there are probably more important things that Apple, Samsung, and other mobile device makers should be focusing on at the moment.</div>

And then there's Android. As it stands, Android is completely 32-bit, and if a lot of work is being done on 64-bit, it certainly isn't being done publicly. I would be extremely surprised if Android 4.4 KitKat turns out to be a 64-bit OS. Porting Android to 64-bit would be a fairly large undertaking, and I doubt that Google would invest the time and effort unless there was a valid reason to do so. In this regard, it will probably come down to how loudly Apple beats the 64-bit drum; if Apple can somehow get the public to think that 64 bits are better than 32 (which wouldn't be hard), then Google will have no recourse but to make the jump.</div>

It's also worth noting that Google is the largest operator of computer servers in the world, and is thus probably very interested in low-power ARM servers. Google's internal server setup is shrouded in secrecy, but it's probably safe to assume that it has at least dabbled in ultra-high-density ARM servers — and <span style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">that</span> is an area where 64-bit processing makes a lot of sense. There is possibly some crossover between Google's server work and 64-bit Android.</div>

Nvidia on Wednesday said that it has made its biggest advance in mobile graphics technology with the integration of its latest graphics core code-named Kepler into Tegra 5, which is code-named Project Logan. The chip is due next year, and will be able to handle the most demanding graphics applications through ray-tracing, tessellation, advanced lighting and post processing, said Daniel Vivoli, senior vice president at Nvidia.</div>

The graphics capabilities in Logan will be demonstrated at the SIGGRAPH show in Anaheim, California. The demo will highlight the ability of a mobile processor to show a lifelike human face while consuming just two to three watts of power. The 3D simulation of the human face will show “full features,” Vivoli said, including light refraction, microscopic wrinkles on the skin, and other small details such as skin oils.</div>

The human face—called Ira by Nvidia—was demonstrated on stage at Nvidia’s GPU Technology Conference and was rendered with server-class graphics processors based on Kepler. Features from those high-end GPUs are being scaled down to fit into the power constraints of mobile devices, Vivoli said. The Ira demonstration was ported to Logan after paring down some hardware capabilities and also with tweaks in clock gating and cache.</div>

Tegra 5 is scheduled to ship next year. Nvidia has just started shipping its Tegra 4 chip, which will be in devices such as Hewlett-Packard’s SlateBook X2 tablet.</div>

Nvidia declined to provide numbers on the graphics performance gains versus Tegra 4. But the graphics core will be faster and more power efficient, and Nvidia said it will use less than a third of the power of graphics cores in tablets like the iPad when rendering the same graphics. Logan will provide better graphics performance at the same power consumption levels.</div>

Nvidia is known for its graphics, and its chips are considered among the best at handling multimedia in mobile devices. The company’s high-end Tesla graphics chips based on Kepler are being used in some of the world’s fastest supercomputers, and now similar features will be available in mobile devices going ahead.</div>

It’s also the first time that Nvidia is bringing its latest graphics core to the mobile processor, effectively uniting all graphics products on the same microarchitecture.</div>

“We’ve always have a separate architecture,” Vivoli said. “We’ve been working for years where we can converge the graphics roadmaps.”</div>

Nvidia earlier offered a graphics development platform called Kayla in which a Tegra processor was attached to a Kepler GPU via a PCI-Express interconnect. The platform was intended to get programmers to start writing mobile applications for the Kepler GPU. But with Logan, the Kepler graphics processor is integrated inside the Tegra chips.</div>

<span style="line-height: 1.7em;">programmers will have to write algorithms and programs to enable augmented reality, face recognition and other high-end multimedia, Vivoli said. Processing such tasks will be quicker when off-loaded to the Kepler graphics core, Vivoli said.</span></div>

It will also be the “first time” GPGPU (general-purpose graphics processing unit computing) comes to mobile devices, Vivoli said, referring to a concept in which processing is being increasingly moved to from CPUs to graphics cores in systems.</div>

But the CPUs and graphics processors still need to work in a coherent manner, and the Tegra 5 chip will support a range of parallel programming tools such as CUDA 5.5, OpenCL 2.0 and Microsoft’s DirectX. Such tools harness the joint processing power of CPUs and GPUs to bring performance gains in supercomputers, and with mobile devices, the performance boosts have to fit within a specific power limit.</div>

There are multiple parallel programming development tools for mobile devices and supercomputing. Intel offers development tools to work with its Xeon Phi accelerator chip, while Advanced Micro Devices is pushing with specifications from the HSA (Heterogeneous System Architecture) Foundation, a group that hopes to provide tools so applications can be easily ported across different chip architectures and devices. Nvidia is not a member of HSA, which is backed by ARM, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments and others.</div>

Beyond Logan, Nvidia is making more hardware improvements that should make graphics rendering faster. The Tegra 6 processor code-named Parker will unite CPU and GPU and make it a shared resource. Parker will also have a 3D structure in which transistors will be stacked on top of each other, which should make the GPU faster and more power efficient. Parker is due for release in 2015.</div>

The two most touted features of the Galaxy S4, the Exynos 5 Octa that powers one-third of Galaxy S4s and the 5 inch AMOLED display that powers their devices have both been subject to criticism with display ghosting and a less than popular S-Lag. While the display ghosting could be due to the new diamond pixels or manufacturing defects the issue of S-Lag surprised many due to the raw performance of the new Exynos 5 chipset which has led speculation that the issue is purely software related.The Exynos 5 processor uses ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture, it is not an original design by Samsung, but a design they build with a license; other companies that will be utilising this design include MediaTek, Fujitsu and LG. The design utilises a 4+4 core layout, where there are four high performance ARM Cortex-A15 cores and four power saving ARM Cortex-A7 cores. The idea behind the design revolves around dynamic, intelligent switching between the cores such as 3 A15s and 1 A7 being active, this means there are never more than four cores active at the same time. This design should theoretically lead to power savings without compromising performance, however this appears to be far from the case.<br /><p dir=ltr>As a XDA-Developer user has discovered, the switching process in the Galaxy S4 has far been far from optimal. Instead of utilising core migration where individual cores are migrated from low to high performance cores and vice versa leading to the optimal usage of processing power and energy efficiency as shown in the ARM demo. Unfortunately the Samsung Galaxy S4 currently uses cluster migration where tasks are switched between clusters instead of individual cores, as a result excess processing power can be used, wasting energy and potentially slower switching leading to the S-Lag. That means despite having this fancy design, it is hardly any different from Nvidia’s Tegra chipset with their 4+1 designs.Fortunately this issue should be simply software related, so a future firmware update should be able to turn the Galaxy S4 from using cluster migration to core migration where cores are switched individually has they reach a certain load threshold instead of waiting for the entire cluster to exceed the load amount, leading to battery savings and a zippier user interface. In the ARM demo in MWC, we clearly see the core migration software working its magic so it is odd that the Galaxy S4 is not capable of this despite being released months later. For Samsung’s sake this update should be their top priority because the longer they sit on their hands, the greater the chance of their reputation being permanently tarnished.In the future though we may see even more intelligent usage of the ARM big.LITTLE architecture with HMP (Heterogeneous Multi-Processing). Current processor designs utilise SMP, where all cores are treated equal and tasks are assigned to the low power A7s by default and only get bumped up to the A15s when required. With a HMP design the phone will know there is a difference between the A7 and A15 cores and will assign the task intelligently based on the task at hand instead of waiting for it to overload the A7 core before moving the A15 leading to even better performance. The reason why this design isn’t currently utilised is due to the limitations of the Linux kernel which is yet to support HMP, but organisations such as Linaro and ARM are working hard to change this.<br />
