<div dir="ltr">
Xiaomi’s hot-new MI3 (or that’s MiPhone 3?) will start shipping on October 15th when users of China Mobile will be able to get the version of the smartphone with NVIDIA’s powerful Tegra 4 chip. That’s the model with China-based TD-SCDMA 3G radio that won’t work anywhere else in the world (at least not on 3G speeds).</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br />
The other model with Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor will ship at a later date, heading to the<br />
customers of China Unicom and China Telecom. We’re not sure why this version doesn’t come first, but what do we know. Perhaps China Telecom, which is the world’s largest mobile operator, wants an exclusive launch window; perhaps we have the newer version of Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974AB) used inside the MI3 to blame. Other devices using this chip (which are already available) rock model MSM8974.<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
In any case, we’re looking forward to find out when Xiaomi will start offering its products in the Western hemisphere. And unfortunately we still wait to get that information. Meanwhile the MI3 specs are worth repeating: aside from a fast CPU, they include a 5-inch full HD screen, 2GB of RAM, 13-megapixel rear camera with Sony’s Exmor RS CMOS sensor, 3,050mAh battery, and 16 or 64 GB of internal storage.<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.7em; margin: 0px 0px 0.7em;">
Nvidia on Wednesday said that it has made its biggest advance in mobile graphics technology with the integration of its latest graphics core code-named Kepler into Tegra 5, which is code-named Project Logan. The chip is due next year, and will be able to handle the most demanding graphics applications through ray-tracing, tessellation, advanced lighting and post processing, said Daniel Vivoli, senior vice president at Nvidia.</div>
<blockquote style="border-left-color: rgb(217, 217, 217); border-left-style: solid; border-left-width: 1px; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 1em 40px; padding-left: 10px;">
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.7em; margin: 0px 0px 0.7em;">
<br /></div>
</blockquote>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.7em; margin: 0px 0px 0.7em;">
The graphics capabilities in Logan will be demonstrated at the SIGGRAPH show in Anaheim, California. The demo will highlight the ability of a mobile processor to show a lifelike human face while consuming just two to three watts of power. The 3D simulation of the human face will show “full features,” Vivoli said, including light refraction, microscopic wrinkles on the skin, and other small details such as skin oils.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.7em; margin: 0px 0px 0.7em;">
The human face—called Ira by Nvidia—was demonstrated on stage at Nvidia’s GPU Technology Conference and was rendered with server-class graphics processors based on Kepler. Features from those high-end GPUs are being scaled down to fit into the power constraints of mobile devices, Vivoli said. The Ira demonstration was ported to Logan after paring down some hardware capabilities and also with tweaks in clock gating and cache.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.7em; margin: 0px 0px 0.7em;">
Tegra 5 is scheduled to ship next year. Nvidia has just started shipping its Tegra 4 chip, which will be in devices such as Hewlett-Packard’s SlateBook X2 tablet.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.7em; margin: 0px 0px 0.7em;">
Nvidia declined to provide numbers on the graphics performance gains versus Tegra 4. But the graphics core will be faster and more power efficient, and Nvidia said it will use less than a third of the power of graphics cores in tablets like the iPad when rendering the same graphics. Logan will provide better graphics performance at the same power consumption levels.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.7em; margin: 0px 0px 0.7em;">
Nvidia is known for its graphics, and its chips are considered among the best at handling multimedia in mobile devices. The company’s high-end Tesla graphics chips based on Kepler are being used in some of the world’s fastest supercomputers, and now similar features will be available in mobile devices going ahead.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.7em; margin: 0px 0px 0.7em;">
It’s also the first time that Nvidia is bringing its latest graphics core to the mobile processor, effectively uniting all graphics products on the same microarchitecture.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.7em; margin: 0px 0px 0.7em;">
“We’ve always have a separate architecture,” Vivoli said. “We’ve been working for years where we can converge the graphics roadmaps.”</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.7em; margin: 0px 0px 0.7em;">
Nvidia earlier offered a graphics development platform called Kayla in which a Tegra processor was attached to a Kepler GPU via a PCI-Express interconnect. The platform was intended to get programmers to start writing mobile applications for the Kepler GPU. But with Logan, the Kepler graphics processor is integrated inside the Tegra chips.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.7em; margin: 0px 0px 0.7em;">
<span style="line-height: 1.7em;">programmers will have to write algorithms and programs to enable augmented reality, face recognition and other high-end multimedia, Vivoli said. Processing such tasks will be quicker when off-loaded to the Kepler graphics core, Vivoli said.</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.7em; margin: 0px 0px 0.7em;">
It will also be the “first time” GPGPU (general-purpose graphics processing unit computing) comes to mobile devices, Vivoli said, referring to a concept in which processing is being increasingly moved to from CPUs to graphics cores in systems.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.7em; margin: 0px 0px 0.7em;">
But the CPUs and graphics processors still need to work in a coherent manner, and the Tegra 5 chip will support a range of parallel programming tools such as CUDA 5.5, OpenCL 2.0 and Microsoft’s DirectX. Such tools harness the joint processing power of CPUs and GPUs to bring performance gains in supercomputers, and with mobile devices, the performance boosts have to fit within a specific power limit.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.7em; margin: 0px 0px 0.7em;">
There are multiple parallel programming development tools for mobile devices and supercomputing. Intel offers development tools to work with its Xeon Phi accelerator chip, while Advanced Micro Devices is pushing with specifications from the HSA (Heterogeneous System Architecture) Foundation, a group that hopes to provide tools so applications can be easily ported across different chip architectures and devices. Nvidia is not a member of HSA, which is backed by ARM, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments and others.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.7em; margin: 0px 0px 0.7em;">
Beyond Logan, Nvidia is making more hardware improvements that should make graphics rendering faster. The Tegra 6 processor code-named Parker will unite CPU and GPU and make it a shared resource. Parker will also have a 3D structure in which transistors will be stacked on top of each other, which should make the GPU faster and more power efficient. Parker is due for release in 2015.</div>

<br /><br />NVIDIA champions GRID as a perfect fit for cloud gaming platforms, but we haven't had much chance to see a good use case in action. The company was more than happy to oblige at E3, however, by streaming games from GRID to an OUYA system. As Android Central caught on video, the tiny console is well-suited to the job: its Tegra 3 and gamepad can comfortably handle remote delivery of an intensive game like Borderlands 2, at least in the controlled world of a trade show. While OUYA doesn't have much (official) access to NVIDIA's GRID at present, the booth demo was a possible vision of the future. It certainly gave OUYA an escape from its hassles on the street.</div>

The $349 device features a 5 inch, 720p display connected to an Xbox-style game controller. It runs Android, and it’s designed first and foremost to be a portable gaming system.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But you can also use it as a general-purpose Android device. The device will ship with Android Jelly Bean software and you can run  any app available from the Google Play Store on it</span></div>

<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="background-color: white;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The video doesn’t show how you would type on the Shield. That’s because the processor would involve trying to tap the button of the screen while it’s firmly attached to the top of the of the game controller. That’d be like trying to type on a laptop by gripping the edges of the keyboard and tapping your thumbs against the bottom of the screen. <span style="line-height: 24px;">one of the limitations of it is that many will find as compared to an Android smartphone  the lack of constant connectivity. Needless to say, that should be something many are familiar with as we often see Android tablets with only WiFi connectivity. Basically, that just means you sometimes need a bit of pre-planning in terms of downloading content. Or as shown in the video, downloading your Gmail before you take off and lose access to the WiFi.</span></span><br />

LTE capable NVIDIA Tegra 4i getting VoLTE soon

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The NVIDIA Tegra 4i has been talked up as a cheaper, smaller, and more power-efficient version of NVIDIA's current top-of-the-line offering of the Tegra 4, but the 4i is already getting an upgrade to support LTE-Advanced without changing the hardware at all. And, even better it may also get VoLTE support soon.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 23px;">What's most interesting is </span><i style="background-color: white; line-height: 23px;">how</i><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 23px;"> the Tegra 4i was upgraded so quickly. The hardware is identical to the part shown off back at Mobile World Congress, but because it features a "software-defined modem," Nvidia simply applied an update to the chip's integrated modem circuitry to bring it up to spec with LTE-Advanced. The company says that another update that it's currently working on will make the 4i compatible with voice over LTE (VoLTE), the long-awaited replacement for old-fashioned circuit switched calling that many carriers — Verizon and AT&T included — will end up using.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 23px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">A "software-defined modem" seems pretty interesting. It also makes us wonder just how hackable the Tegra 4i could be. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Aesthetically, both cards are identical, save for the shoddy engravings of their names. Based on the leaked pictures, both cards seem to share the same NVTTM cooler found on the GTX Titan. But that is where the similarities end.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">According to reports, the GTX 780 will cost somewhere between $699 and $759 and feature a GK110 core with 2496 CUDA cores, 208 TMUs, 40 ROPs, 5GB GDDR5 memory and 384/320-bit memory interface. The GTX 770 is expected to cost around $400 and pack a GK104-425 core with 1536 CUDA cores, 128 TMUs, 32 ROPs, 2GB GDDR5 memory and 256-bit memory interface.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://www.mobiledoctors.co/search?q=nvidia">NVIDIA</a> made massive waves during January 2013’s CES, when both the Tegra 4 platform and the uber-cool <a href="http://www.mobiledoctors.co/2013/01/nvidia-launches-tegra-4-processor-and.html">Project Shield</a> gaming console were introduced to the world, but unfortunately ever since then the SoC and GPU maker has struggled to get back in the spotlight.</span></div>

<div style="line-height: 21px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Qualcomm's newest Snapdragon SoCs have been getting quite a lot of attention lately. That comes as no surprise given the fact that their maker managed to bring the Snapdragon 600 to the market in a timely manner, and the even more powerful Snapdragon 800 is almost ready to be produced in volume. However, let us not forget that there's one more very capable contestant, which is about to stick its next-gen quad-core chip inside a number of upcoming smartphones and tablets. Of course, we're talking about NVIDIA and its Tegra 4 system-on-a-chip.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 21px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 21px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One of the very first commercial devices to be powered by Tegra 4 will be NVIDIA's portable, Android-based video game console – a gadget that you may have heard about, currently known only by its Project Shield codename. And since gaming will be its primary purpose, it goes without saying that its maker will ensure that the device has the processing power required to run even the most demanding of Android video games. But just how powerful is Project Shield, and more importantly, how powerful is the Tegra 4 SoC inside it? Well, it's very capable indeed, if this alleged Project Shield benchmark is anything to go by.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 21px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 21px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<div style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Apparently, someone who has possession of a Project Shield console ran the popular AnTuTu benchmark on it and<span style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><b> </b>got an impressive score of over 32 000 points</span>. In comparison, a Samsung Galaxy S4 with a Snapdragon 600 chip gets about 25 000 points at best. Sure, the latter has a 1080p screen, while the Tegra 4's 72 GPU cores need to drive less pixels on a 720p display, but still, a difference of over 7000 points is impressive no matter how we look at it.</span></div>
<div style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Keep in mind that benchmarks aren't always an accurate source of information as they can easily be faked. In other words, the device that has appeared on AnTuTu may not be a Shield console at all and its results may have been manipulated. But if the data contained in the benchmark results is legitimate, then NVIDIA's Tegra 4 could be a worthy competitor to the Snapdragon 600, as much as Qualcomm wants to convince us that its chips are superior.</span></div>
